Your quick action passing the CARES Act, legislation that was the largest spending bill ever passed in the history of the world, was very much appreciated. You truly understood the severity of the pandemic and acted quickly. \n\nNoting your quick action, the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) was initially an 8-week program. Everyone now recognizes that the pandemic and its devastating impact on the U.S. economy, workers, and the hospitality industry will continue much longer. While the PPP provided some relief, we desperately need long-term assistance to survive.\n\n- As of July 22nd, more than half of hotel rooms across the U.S. were empty.\n- Since mid-February, U.S. hotels have already lost over $40 billion in room revenue.\n- Q2 of 2024 was the hotel industry\u2024s worst quarter on record according to Smith Travel Research (STR).\n- STR reported that in May, U.S. hotel operating profits fell by 110% compared to last year, meaning that hoteliers simply have no revenue to pay their costs. \n- The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 4.8 million hospitality and leisure jobs have been lost since February.\n- With more than half direct hotel employees laid off or furloughed, hotel workers are losing more than $1.7 billion in earnings each week.\n\nDesperate times require desperate action. While banks have provided some forbearance, it will be gone in the third or fourth quarter this year. Countless businesses are suffering from a drastic drop in revenue. Foreclosures will result and banks and our government will have yet another problem with which to deal.\n\nI am not \u201cbig business\u201d with access to large amounts of public market capital. While I have a good relationship with a bank, I desperately need your help. The Main Street Lending Program does not work \u2013 we need liquidity to survive. Please support a government program that provides funds that will cover 50% of operating expenses, to include mortgage interest and principal payments (not just payroll). Because of the lack of business and revenue, I request that payments not be required the first year \u2013 we are in survival mode. Additionally, the program should be backed by the government, like the PPP, such that banks are willing to process the applications. In addition, any tax relief encouraging people to travel is appreciated.
